Last Monday (16th June 2014) saw the launch of this year’s ‘Big Commuting Challenge’ just after Sustrans Two Tunnels project celebrates a year since it`s opening. Sustrans worked closely with Lighting Services to ensure lighting in the tunnel was safe for visitors, whilst incorporating the requirements for the resident bat population.
Over 300 multiple LED luminaires were used to lowlight the cycle path Two Tunnels of Coombe Down in Bath, which run for over 1600m in length (The longest cycle path tunnel in Europe). Project leader Richard Ludlow says of the scheme; “Lighting Services were tasked to provide a lighting solution that provided both durability and longevity whilst fulfilling the ecological requirements of the tunnels” “We hope that as more people use the cycle track during this Commuting Challenge they will appreciate the environmentally sensitive lighting within the tunnels”.
The ‘Commuting Challenge’ in association with Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils and the Department for Transport runs until Friday 1st August 2014. The challenge is set to encourage people across Bristol and Bath’s four council residential areas to find a ‘green’ alternative for their journey to work.
