Following the successful transformation of the portico and entrance at Freemasons’ Hall in Bristol, Connected Light was once again appointed to deliver an internal lighting upgrade for this iconic Grade II listed venue. The goal was to create a warmer, more functional interior while respecting the historic context and enabling greater flexibility for events, ceremonies and public visits.
As a long-standing client, the Freemasons’ Hall team trusted Connected Light to recommend a solution that would integrate seamlessly with the existing fabric of the building. Minimising disruption was crucial, as was avoiding any new cabling or invasive works that could compromise listed features.
We specified a series of like-for-like luminaire replacements, chosen not only for technical performance but also for their ability to blend into the refreshed décor. The overall aim was to create a more inviting and comfortable visual environment, with a consistent warm white colour temperature throughout the space.
Central to the scheme was the implementation of Casambi wireless lighting control, which eliminated the need for rewiring while delivering powerful functionality. The system allows for automatic timed events, custom scene settings, and remote operation – giving the Hall team total flexibility for different uses and occasions.
A standout feature of the project was the addition of bespoke tubular luminaires, designed by Connected Light and installed in a cascading formation down the central staircase. Each luminaire is independently controlled through Casambi, creating a striking visual focal point while retaining precise control over brightness and tone.
“This internal upgrade has produced a stunning transformation for the Hall,” says Matt Holway, Director at Connected Light. “It’s a perfect example of how modern lighting technology can be used to enhance period architecture without compromise.”
Delivered in partnership with DTE Electrical Bristol, the project has significantly improved the building’s usability for private events and public functions alike. It stands alongside the portico upgrade as part of a broader lighting transformation across the venue.
The project also features in Casambi’s own case study as a benchmark for non-invasive lighting in heritage settings. For more on our work in similar environments, visit our historic and listed buildings page.
