Sustainable, Non-Intrusive Controls for a Versatile Creative Space

St George’s Bristol, one of Europe’s most respected venues for chamber music and performance, needed a complete lighting overhaul in its contemporary annex. The team required a solution that could modernise the space while preserving the venue’s architectural integrity – including exposed concrete and timber panelling.

Connected Light was appointed to deliver a full lighting controls strategy, working in collaboration with the architectural lighting team at Mott MacDonald. With sustainability, minimal disruption and flexibility as key priorities, the project demanded a pragmatic approach that could be installed quickly, cleanly and future-proofed for the venue’s diverse programme of events.

Connected Light supplied and integrated a hybrid control system combining Salvador Series 1000 DALI controllers with Casambi CBU-ASD and Danlers CBU-4INPUT components, supporting RG Electrical – Bristol with the installation.. The system allowed legacy DALI fixtures to operate seamlessly alongside Casambi-ready devices – all controlled wirelessly through a single network.

75% of the existing LED sources were reused. New remote drivers replaced legacy gear, supporting long-term maintenance and minimising the need to disturb delicate finishes. Grazing light was introduced in the deep window reveals to enhance ambience, and all equipment was installed without additional cabling.

“This was a perfect example of discreet technology enhancing creativity,” says Matt Holway, Director at Connected Light. “The Salvador system enabled us to deliver precise DALI control without the complexity of traditional commissioning, all within a Casambi-ready framework.”

The system provides full flexibility for studio users – from musicians and creatives to event organisers and speakers. Trish Brown, Operations Director at St George’s Bristol, commented:

“Our lighting in the Glass Studio has improved significantly. We can now host our varied programme of events without worrying about whether the lighting will suit the activity – whether it’s a gig, a rehearsal or a conference. The flexibility of the system is fantastic. Matt and the Connected Light team were incredibly patient with our post-commissioning tweaks and genuinely collaborative throughout.”

The project was completed on time and on budget. Featured by Casambi as a benchmark installation, it also marks the first deployment of Salvador in Bristol.

This project reflects Connected Light’s wider experience in lighting control integration, renewable lighting solutions, and sensitive upgrades within historic and listed buildings.
