High-efficiency LED lighting and sensors have been installed throughout The Foundry – a new learning space and hub facility for enterprise and technological innovation.
Described as an ‘industry-facing enterprise zone’, The Foundry is a new facility located at the heart of University of the West of England, Bristol’s Frenchay campus. Occupying areas including the
former Students’ Union bar, The Foundry has been established to provide a hub for enterprise and innovation – with a particular focus on developing the digital skills that the UK requires to compete successfully in the global digital economy.
The new facilities were designed and developed in line with UWE Bristol’s stated emphasis on the continual improvement of its environmental performance through the implementation and review of objectives and targets. It therefore follows that energy-efficiency was a primary objective of the lighting system for The Foundry, prompting UWE Bristol Architectural Designer James Gray to put in an enquiry to locally-based lighting specialist Connected Light.
“It swiftly became clear that they had great access to the entire market of lighting solutions – if there is a fitting out there they know all about it,” comments Gray. The CL team was also able to quickly grasp the multiple requirements of the installation in which “the overall aesthetics were a key driver in conjunction with the environmental considerations. The lighting had to be conducive to what might be termed an ‘industrial theme’ present in The Foundry while making it possible for a uniformity of luminance to be maintained.”
The resulting installation utilises Glamox Luxo GIR LED industrial linear, highly-efficient fittings as well as daylight and occupancy sensors, ensuring that light is only delivered when and where it is required. The work was completed to time and to expectation, with Gray observing that Connected Light was able to achieve “an exceptional level of design.
“We are very impressed by the work that has been carried out, and the quality and consistency of illumination that it has delivered to what is an extremely important addition to the UWE Bristol’s
facilities. The lighting really had to be ‘right’ for such a flagship project – and it is,” concludes Gray.
It’s an association that could be set to continue as UWE Bristol prepares to embark upon Phase 2
development work of The Foundry in the near-future.

I've been a Client of Connected Light when working as a Project Manager for two NHS Trusts in Bristol over the past three years. Every interaction with Matt and the wider team at the company is a positive one, and everyone I have dealt with has been excellent at explaining legislation, the possibilities with various lighting fixtures and designs. Fee proposals are very reasonable, well presented and complete and Connected Light deliver on what is defined at the outset.
Competence, particularly certified competence, is of paramount importance on the fire safety projects we are working on together, so Connected Light's expertise and accreditations are not only invaluable but also a necessity.
Thank you Connected Light for being a crucial part of our projects and assisting in making our hospital buildings safer, compliant and nicer places to be.
The RUH have a close working relationship with Connected Light, working on many projects, having provided equipment and technological advice for a large £1.4 million upgrade from fluorescent LED across the hospital estate. They have supported us with design services in all applications including new external car parks, illuminating the front façade of the hospital in blue and supporting our recent new buildings including Dyson Cancer Care . Their team are always extremely helpful and knowledgeable, offering a wide range of services. The RUH works with Connected Light on a regular basis for lighting design, procurement of equipment and technical expertise on bespoke projects.
I have recently been working with Connected Light on a number of Lifecycle projects in the education sector and they have been great to work with, from conception and scoping works through to the delivery and installation.
They have been attentive to changes and client requirements as well as knowledgeable of the lighting systems required for a school setting and have delivered a bespoke product that the end users are very happy with. I can trust Matt and the rest of the team to come up with a solution to fit whatever criteria I’ve thrown their way that is both fit for purpose and within budget constraints! Designs are thorough and detailed and the installation works on site have always been carried out safely and with a high standard of housekeeping and pride. I look forward to continuing working with the Connected Light team!
