Connected Light’s long standing relationship with the University of the West of England (UWE) continues to flourish across the university estate. In February 2016 they won the Go Green Business award for ‘Most Improved Energy & Efficiency’ which included the new lighting in the Centre for Sport.
The existing sports hall lighting was inefficient and lacked control. The 300 lux fixed output was not sufficient for official competitions in badminton, volleyball and basketball etc. It also fell far short of the standards required for International Hockey for the England’s Women’s Team who use the sports hall for winter training.
The squash court lighting also required higher light levels for the use of elite athletes, including world champion Mohammed El Shorbagy who also trains at the centre.
“[Connected Light] have continued to deliver us with high quality solutions” said Stephen Carter, project engineer at UWE. “They have been instrumental in helping the University to improve efficiency and lighting aesthetics across the estate.”
A Digital Lumens LED solution was proposed that could provide a substantial 70% increase in light levels. The facility also required flexible zonal control, occupancy detection and of course a reduction in energy and maintenance costs against the old outdated system, despite the higher output.
Installation on the new lighting was completed by Concab Electrical early in 2016. With the University’s ability to now use light as and when it is required, their early performance suggests an annual energy saving of £24,000. This is a saving against the old system well in excess of 80%.
“We are thrilled with the results that the new lighting delivers.” Steve Carter continued. “We have the flexibility to light single courts and vary the light levels depending on sport and it’s requirements”.

As a member of BS 5266 I am so excited to see such suitable, diligent, compliant processing from Connected Light. BS 5266 pt. 1 is a Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises. This is the base document that calls up relevant standards and outlines how they should be interfaced. It also details how types of emergency lighting systems should be designed, installed, commissioned, and tested for different types of premises. Installation and wiring considerations are detailed and the appropriate testing and commissioning documentation are defined.
Connected Light as a member of the Fire Industry Association and competent compliance with BAFE SP203 part 4 adheres to appropriate verification for suitable compliance with all of their customers.

I've been a Client of Connected Light when working as a Project Manager for two NHS Trusts in Bristol over the past three years. Every interaction with Matt and the wider team at the company is a positive one, and everyone I have dealt with has been excellent at explaining legislation, the possibilities with various lighting fixtures and designs. Fee proposals are very reasonable, well presented and complete and Connected Light deliver on what is defined at the outset.
Competence, particularly certified competence, is of paramount importance on the fire safety projects we are working on together, so Connected Light's expertise and accreditations are not only invaluable but also a necessity.
Thank you Connected Light for being a crucial part of our projects and assisting in making our hospital buildings safer, compliant and nicer places to be.
