Connected Light was commissioned by the University of Bath to deliver a full lighting design and compliance upgrade for 2 West, the university’s largest lecture theatre. Working closely with the estates and project team, the brief was to modernise the general and emergency lighting systems while integrating seamlessly with the existing building infrastructure and Helvar controls.
The installation was delivered in partnership with RPC Electrical, whose on-site support helped ensure smooth delivery within the short holiday window available.
Visual comfort and glare control were key challenges. While many would default to linear systems, only specific MPO optics and luminaire widths were able to meet the tight glare and performance criteria. Connected Light trialled and selected a bespoke specification that achieved exceptional uniformity ratios and supported the university’s high standards for lecture environments.
All general and emergency lighting was tailored to the space. Asymmetric wall wash fittings were introduced to highlight the teaching wall without glare, and all emergency fittings were placed to satisfy compliance regulations for escape routes, exit signage and emphasis points.
Ben Spicer, Head of Engineering Services at the University of Bath, noted:
“This project was a major step forward in modernising one of our most used teaching spaces. Connected Light’s thorough approach to design, compliance, and delivery helped ensure everything ran smoothly from concept through to handover.”
The lighting was fully configured to work with the university’s existing Helvar system, providing scene control via local switches and AV integration. A full BAFE-compliant certificate was issued upon completion.
Lobby areas were also upgraded. Connected Light designed and supplied plug-and-play retrofit LED gear trays, transforming the ceiling reveal with dynamic colour-wash effects. Direct-facing pendants were used to maintain visual balance while preserving the impact of the ceiling display.
James Short, Building Management System Supervisor, added:
“The integration with our Helvar controls was seamless, and the new lighting scenes have made a real difference to usability. The team at Connected Light understood exactly what we needed and delivered it without compromise.”
Matt Holway, Director at Connected Light, said:
“This project shows what’s possible when a clear design vision, expert installation, and tight collaboration all come together. It gave our lighting design team the perfect opportunity to demonstrate both technical precision and creativity, all while meeting compliance and control objectives in a live teaching environment.”
The entire project was carefully scheduled to align with the university’s Christmas closure, ensuring full completion ahead of the new term. From initial survey to final commissioning, Connected Light delivered a future-ready, regulation-compliant system tailored to one of the university’s most important teaching spaces.

As a member of BS 5266 I am so excited to see such suitable, diligent, compliant processing from Connected Light. BS 5266 pt. 1 is a Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises. This is the base document that calls up relevant standards and outlines how they should be interfaced. It also details how types of emergency lighting systems should be designed, installed, commissioned, and tested for different types of premises. Installation and wiring considerations are detailed and the appropriate testing and commissioning documentation are defined.
Connected Light as a member of the Fire Industry Association and competent compliance with BAFE SP203 part 4 adheres to appropriate verification for suitable compliance with all of their customers.

Connectedlight have worked for ETS designing and supplying lighting systems that deliver full turnkey projects repeatedly building up a valued trust between the companies. We have also been employed by Connectedlight upgrading lighting systems in many schools across the South.
Connectedlight engineers attention to detail is of a very high standing understanding the clients brief and looking at ways of energy saving and cost-effective installation. We have worked with various other lighting design companies, but Connectedlight definitely stand out in this area.
Their engineers and staff are professional, polite and keep you informed with updates on design and deliveries and will do whatever is required to succeed.
Their working accreditations reflect their quality of service and attention to detail. Construction Line Gold is a highly commended accreditation and requires a specific level of commitment, especially on health and safety and communicating between all parties involved. ETS Group have this accreditation and understands its level of difficulty to acquire.
Working with Connected Light Lighting Architects is a pleasure.

I have recently been working with Connected Light on a number of Lifecycle projects in the education sector and they have been great to work with, from conception and scoping works through to the delivery and installation.
They have been attentive to changes and client requirements as well as knowledgeable of the lighting systems required for a school setting and have delivered a bespoke product that the end users are very happy with. I can trust Matt and the rest of the team to come up with a solution to fit whatever criteria I’ve thrown their way that is both fit for purpose and within budget constraints! Designs are thorough and detailed and the installation works on site have always been carried out safely and with a high standard of housekeeping and pride. I look forward to continuing working with the Connected Light team!
