Connected Light utilised Casambi’s Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to provide full control within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Southmead Hospital.
The wireless controls were integrated into a range of selected products from Trilux lighting which provided a Human Centric Lighting facility within the space. These luminaires were provided with DALI DT8 drivers and tunable white LED arrays, packaged together with an antiglare MPO diffuser for maximum comfort.
With the on-going research into circadian rhythm lighting simulations with the use of ‘tunable white’ LED light sources, it was an opportunity to support this project with the latest innovation and technology available today.
In neonatal intensive care units (NICU), lighting plays a crucial role in the development and well-being of premature babies. Historically, these infants were often subjected to continuous bright light, which is detrimental to their development. Nowadays, there’s an understanding that circadian lighting solutions can benefit premature babies.
Lighting simulating a natural day-night rhythm has shown to offer numerous advantages, including enhancing sleep duration, hormone regulation, and shortening hospital stays. We delivered each cot bay with two independant luminaires which could be controlled separately with local wireless switches. These were programmed to provide low level scene control to offer the staff and babies the most functionality to support each bay correctly.
